How to close your item at the time of day you want it to close: (How to use decimals when posting to the 'Days Until Close' field of the 'Quick Post a New Item' Form)

In an effort to allow more flexibility with the closing time of your auctions, the Lily Auction now allows users to use decimals when posting to the 'Days Until Close' field of the 'Quick Post a New Item' Form. In order to do this, you will have to be able add a decimal division of the day to the number of days until close. This means that you will be able to divide a 24 hour day up into 10 segments and add additional decimal increments of a day to your ending time. For example, adding .1 to the number of days will add exactly 2 hours and 24 minutes to your auction.  You will be able to check the closing time in the preview before you finalize the posting of your auction. If your auction is not closing at the time you want in the preview, you will be able to use your back arrow to go back and correct it. Whenever you enter a number to the 'Days Until Close' section of the form, you are adding increments of time to the actual time of day it is when you are adding the new item. By adding only whole numbers, the time your auction closes is dependent on the time you are posting it. By being able to use decimals, you can be more specific as to what time of day you want your auction to close.  So now your item doesn't have to close at the same time of day as the time it was when you posted it. However, be forewarned, this requires some calculations on your part.  Hopefully, we will someday be able to upgrade this feature so that you will eventually just be able to enter the time you want your auction to close. In the meantime, please always check the closing time in your 'preview' and make sure that it is correct, before you post the item.

Here is some more information and examples to help you know  what decimal number to use.

.1 day = 2hrs, 24 min
.2 day = 4hrs, 48 min
.3 day = 7hrs, 12 min
.4 day = 9hrs, 36 min
.5 day = exactly 12 hrs
.6 day = 14hrs, 24 min
.7 day = 16hrs, 48 min
.8 day = 19hrs, 12 min
.9 day = 21hrs, 36 min

conversion chart 1

example 1: You are posting an item at 6AM on Jan 1, 2000 (Jan 1 12:00:00 2000) , and you want the item to close at 6PM on Jan 6, 2000 (Jan 6 17:00:00 2000). Therefore you must enter the number 5.5 on the 'Days Until Close' field. Using the number 5.5 adds makes your auction close 5 days and 12 hours after the time you are posting. (Please note: entering an additional .5 adds 1/2 day - this is the easiest number to configure since you can just add or subtract a half a day).

example 2: Suppose it is is 8:06PM on March 5th (Mar 5 20:06:00 2001) and want your auction to close approximately 3:30PM on March 12th (Mar 12 15:30:00) 2001. This is  6 days and 20 hours and 24 minutes from now. By entering 6.8 to the field, you are adding 6 days, 19 hours and 12 minutes to your auction (see conversion chart on left). Your auction will close on March 12 at 3:18PM (Mar 12 15:18:00), not exact but close enough.

If the above chart  isn't complicated enough for you, the closing time can even be fine tuned more by also using the chart 2 to the right, in addition to chart 1 above. Each of the numbers in chart 2 adds an additional increment of time.

Example 3: Entering the number 1.11 adds 1 day PLUS 2 hours and 24 minutes (see char1) PLUS an additional 14 minutes and 24 seconds (see Chart 2). This adds a total of 1 day, 38 minutes and 24 seconds to your auction.

Example 4: Entering 5.55 adds 5 days PLUS 12 hours (see Chart 1) PLUS 1 hour and 12 Minutes (see Chart 2). This adds a total of 5 days, 13 hours and 12 minutes).

Hope this helps. If you mathematicians can explain this better, please let me know. I don't know what to tell you math haters. Good luck!

.01 day = 14 min, 24 sec
.02 day = 28 min, 48 sec
.03 day = 43 min, 12 sec
.04 day = 57 min, 36 sec
.05 day = exactly 1hr, 12 min
.06 day = 1 hr 24 min, 24 sec
.07 day = 1 hr 40 min, 48 sec
.08 day = 1hr, 55 min, 12 sec
.09 day = 2 hrs, 9 min, 36 sec
