HYBRIDIZER'SPIC AND DESCRIPTION: Gary Colby (Petit, 2005) height 26in (66cm), bloom 8in (20.5cm), season M, Rebloom, Semi-Evergreen, Tetraploid, Fragrant, Rose with gold edge above green throat. (John Peat × Moment In the Sun) *GARY COLBY *GARY COLBY -- (John Peat) (J. T. Davis x Tet. Siloam Ralph Henry) Sev. 8” fl. 26” sc. M 35 buds. This is not your grandmother’s daylily. These huge, 8” extremely heavy substanced flowers carry a 1” ornately ruffled gold edge. The gold edge loops and folds, going all the way to the midrib. The color varies during the season, beginning as a copper rose and softening to a coral to mauve pink as the season progresses. The most important break in my hybridizing career, Gary Colby is an extraordinary parent, changing the look of my hybridizing program. A true middle of the road semi-evergreen, it performs as an evergreen in warm climates, but goes dormant in cold climates. The plants are large and vigorous, beginning to bloom in May and were still blooming in September. Named for one of the nicest guys in daylilies, Gary Colby of California. Blooming in a bed of my best cultivars and those of other hybridizers, Gary Colby looks like something landed from outer space. I am thankful to Larry Grace for sharing pollen to produce this beauty. |
