American Idol (2015)

10-233-1 [Mean Green x Heman] Tet 36" 7" M Dor, 3-4 Branches, 18-22 Buds. This beautiful powerhouse is the result of crossing ‘Heman’ to one of my favorite hybridizing parents, ‘Mean Green’. I have found that ‘Mean Green’ seedlings often take on the color of the other parent, but in this case, there is a beautiful blending of the two. The result is a coral toned UFO Crispate with much cleaner color than pollen parent, ‘Heman.’ When I first tagged this seedling in my seedling bed, it had what I considered a “freakish” scape on it. In reality, it was just an abnormally good scape for the cramped growing conditions with 4 lateral branches and a terminal Y.

The statistics I used to register this beauty are on the conservative side as they were collected under less than ideal growing conditions. This is validated by the comments Judy Davisson made in her auction of this cultivar, "The plant is huge and makes enormous scapes in my garden. Better than registered, it has tall 37 to 40" inch scapes with 5 and 6 way branching and over 40 buds." I included a picture of the scape taken by Judy in her garden. She grows daylilies better than I ever hope to!

I consider ‘American Idol’ to be my best introduction to date and worthy of the name! Fertile both ways but like many UFO’s, it can be a difficult pod parent.
