Extremely showy and exotic-looking, Crocosmia produce decorative clumps of erect sword-shaped leaves and brilliant wands of fiery scarlet, tubular flowers which bloom for 5-8 weeks from mid summer through mid fall.
All crocosmias are winter hardy in zones 6-9. Some species are reliably hardy in zones 4 and 5. I do not know the species that I have, but it is bright red. If you are concerned about hardiness, treat as you would gladiolus. Dig the bulbs up after the first light frost and store them indoors for winter.
Plant the corms about 6 to 8 inches (15-20.5 cm.) apart at a depth of 3 to 5 inches (7.5-12.5 cm.). Plant them in clusters in full to part sun for the best results. The corms will naturalize, or produce offsets, over time. They should be divided every three to four years to keep them blooming vigorously.
Once planted, little is needed in the way of crocosmia bulb care. They are light feeders and do not need additional fertilizer. Too much fertilizer can cause lush foliage with few flowers.
The corms that I will send to you are freshly dug. They can be planted immediately, or you can dry and store them where temperatures are moderate over the freezing period. Then plant outside when soil temperatures warm up.
