Maybe it is a sign of the times, or maybe that I noticed a lot of interest in the past year, but it seems Black is Back! In the past ten years or so there has been some, but not much, work done in the area of black. Hey, Black Daylilies Matter! They are the perfect accent to bright daylilies and other flowers. They also make a spectacular bed if you find yourself in an Adams Family kind of mood. The only hybridizer who paid attention and made some headway in this area is my friend: J.D.Stadler of Celestial Gardens. I finally got his Black Fury in the garden and will make some crosses with it next year. I also got some Michael Bouman blacks that promise to be good ones. All in all, it looks like the more famous hybridizers stopped their progress in this area quite a while ago. SO---It's up to us home hobbyists to work on this. With Halloween coming up in a few weeks---it's time to think BLACK!
