Karen Stephens x SC Thorny Devil - 6 sds
(pictures and descriptions are hybridizer's unless noted)
Karen Stephens (Kinnebrew, 2008) 6”, sev, rec, TET – With Randy Stephens as our cover flower this past year, it only stands to reason that we name a flower for his “better half” this year. Besides saturated dark red color and ruffled gold edge, Karen has as good a plant habit as you can find anywhere in our garden. Huge plants produce strong, very well branched scapes. At times, we have counted as many as 4 or 5 lateral branches, plus the top. Tremendous fertility is another highly favorable trait. It seems that you can set a pod any time you like, with any pollen you choose. With this in mind, many of our very best seedlings are from Karen, especially as a pod parent. These range from reds and blacks with gold edges, reds with gold and white toothy edges, to even some doubles, as this flower will occasionally double late in the season. Unfortunately, darker colors have proven difficult for us to capture on an image, so please take our word for the beauty of this flower. Outstanding 30” scapes hold up to 32 buds. Strong multiple bloomer. (SC Rebel Yell X Jerry Nettles) x Pure Indulgence
Spacecoast Thorny Devil (Kinnebrew, 2009) 6 ” sev, rec, TET - This standout lily has been a top performer for several years in our garden. An adoring visitor suggested the name “Crown of Thorns” and thus it has been called. We had always planned to use this garden name, but turns out it was used some years earlier. If you like teeth, this one has plenty, some white and some of the gold variety. With its dark red color, this lily has really opened new doors in our toothy breeding program. In our 2009 seedling field, we marked several black reds with teeth. Fertile both ways, this is a hybridizer’s special. Scapes are 24”, carrying up to 18 buds. (Paula Nettles X Karen Stephens)
Obviously you can start your seeds any way you find that works for you, but I highly recommend starting in damp vermiculite (about a teaspoon per bag) using the bag they are shipped in and keep in the refrigerator till sprouted. Plant in sterile growth medium (I use Promix). I've had great success with this method.

The size and shape of seeds can vary greatly. Some are plump with no wrinkling or shriveling, while others are wrinkled up quite a lot. Some daylilies produce tiny seeds and others are fat and plump. This does not change their viability. All precautions are taken to protect the viability of the seeds. Seeds are inspected before shipping and any that don’t pass the pinch test are eliminated.
