Flourish of Trumpets (Sobek, 1998)

This cultivar is hands down my favorite in all the garden. I love Bob Sobek's work--he doesn't follow trends but he has a wonderful aesthetic that he adheres to with overall plant performance at the top of the list. This plant is picture perfect from one year to the next, tall and balanced with gorgeous scapes that produce perfectly formed pastel lemon blooms for several weeks. It is obligingly fertile, so I have used it a lot in the years that I have owned it. Next year will be the maiden bloom of its first set of babies, so I will know than for sure what it passes along.

CABBAGE BUTTERFLY is an unregistered Goldner cultivar. Blooming late it is of fairly short stature--28" or so and produces immense flowers with a wonderfully exotic appearance. The vigor is slow but steady--it is not delicate--just deliberate. It always attracts a lot of attention when its flowering. But the thing I REALLY love about this hard to find beauty, is the strength of the babies it produces. Golder cultivars are known to be highly inbred and the lineage of CABBAGE, like most Golders, is obscure. But my guess would be that inbreeding produced the wonderful flower, and also produces what appears to be hybrid vigor in its babies. Seedlings routinely are taller than CABBAGE--in the 36-40 inch range, flowers are large and prettily shaped and branching and budcount are really fine. Colors run a wide range with almost all babies possesing some kind of eyezone.

I would hope here for a Late with good height in the 36" range, very pretty colors, with excellent budcount and branching. Bloom shape would probably be a midpoint between the more formal FLOURISH and the uninhibited extravagance of CABBAGE.
