Auction is for 5 seeds from the cross of BLAZING CANNONS X MASTER AND BOLD RULER.
POD PARENT:
BLAZING CANNONS
Bill Waldrop 2013
(Spacecoast Blood Diamond x Home of the Free)
Sev. Tet. Early to mid-season blooms. 31" tall, 5-way branching, 25 buds, 7" flower.
BLAZING CANNONS is a cross between two champions. A champion "pod parent" from the Kinnebrew garden, and another champion "pollen parent" from the garden of Larry Grace. These two parents produced a brilliant red flower that is 7" in diameter. BLAZING CANNONS has grown very well here in North Georgia, and I'm pleased to also report that it often produces proliferations. BLAZING CANNONS received its name after I watched many episodes on the history channel about the Civil War. Pod and pollen fertile.
POLLEN PARENT:
*MASTER & BOLD RULER (Pierce G.) 4406-H ((Midnight Castle x Buffalo Thunder) x Max Factor) TET, EV, EMRE, 40” high, 9 1/2” - 11 ¾” When extended. 5 way branching, 40 Buds. HUGE Zones 4-9 Hardy
Where in the world do I begin? Firstly, I want to point out that no daylily that I have created and probably will create will change for the better the future of Daylily Hybridizing. This daylily is truly The Master of our garden. MASTER & BOLD RULER has no faults. If you look at the above stats and embrace the following you will see why I love it so. I would like to add though that this long description is not about pride or exaggeration, or is priced for greed. I basically got lucky and this leap forward is a game changer; not only for me but for everyone who chooses to see or breed with him. My claim to fame is simply long hours and hard work, so while breeding for BIG, I made as many crosses and seed as I could, forgoing other directions, to simply explore the gene pool of big! I mostly use the same technique today.
OK here are some facts: The Master has never lost a plant; whether dividing-up in August or in a clump. He has grown and survived well over this past winter in a zone 4 section of New Hampshire after a cold winter with no mulching or snow cover! Regarding the size factor, the phrase genetically jumped the fence is precisely what has happened; again to ALL OF OUR good fortune… The process went from two parents approx. 7” to an offspring over 70% larger. Like a horse giving birth to an elephant! With large ruffles and the occasional angel wings, MASTER AND BOLD RULER does not hang-up and has the strength to always open no matter what’s in the petals way. Pod Fertility is average to good whereas generally big flowers are the hardest to set on. There are many other attributes. One problem for me is once I release this monster how do I then introduce 7 ½”, 7 ¾” or 8” futures?
