These are my final auction listings for the season and I wish to sincerely thank everyone for your support!
Pod parent: ZELAZNY (Michaels 2004) M 36" DOR 7" purple bitone 4.3:1 spider with cream midribs over large chartreuse to lime throat, 2 well spaced laterals and 23 buds. A vigorous increaser with deep green leaves that makes small fans. A pod and pollen fertile diploid that I've used to increase scape strength and improve foliage color, its an excellent performer in zone 4 Iowa. Makes skinny fans. Named in memory of Roger Zelazny, author of THIS IMMORTAL, LORD OF LIGHT, ROADMARKS, the Amber series, and dozens of other novels, as well as numerous award winning short stories. I've been told that the name translates as "iron." Pod parent of BANSHEE BABY TALK. (MISS JESSIE X LADY FINGERS).
Pollen parent: WKTM2IG-19 (unregistered) I’ve been fooled by first bloomers before so when this seedling opened its mere 5 very weird flowers in 2017, I didn’t bother to use its pollen. In 2018, when all the blooms on 4 scapes looked like this, its kinkiness overshadowed that fact that it was only 24” tall. Red violet with a bit of lighter halo over a chartreuse throat, the flowers were sometimes streaked with white but each always had crests at the tips on either side of its midribs on every petals. Usually the crests devolved closer towards the center of the bloom into paler ridges, and when I first noticed the flower in 2017, I thought “how cool, it has pale stripes on each petal tip” but no, it was really crests similar to those on Curt Hanson’s THE OWL that he called “owl ears.” It certainly has better color than THE OWL. Blooms are 6˝” and the plant is most likely DOR. Only 8-9 buds per scape, but who cares – there’s so much breeding potential! {[(WILSON SPIDER x KINDLY LIGHT) x TOMORROW'S SONG) x MILITARY SCHOOL] X INSTANT GRAFFITI}.
Goals: Very purple blooms. I believe that the best way to capture the tip crests would be to grow these out and cross them with each other or another daylily that exhibits cresting, or white streaking if that is what you are most interested in
