TET 785 A (Dixie Sunrise x Big Red Wagon) 43" EM Re, Fr, EV, 6" 5 way branching, 40 buds. This is one great show flower, and everyone took note this year of the tremendous thick tall scapes! The base color is a dark royal purple with a little violet, especially in the watermark, where it accents the large green throat. But I haven't even got to the best part yet; ROMEO PRINCE is what I would call a pod stud with each scape producing multiple large seed pods. I can still hear Karen saying "You should take a picture of all those". Easily fertile both ways. $150.00�

EARL PORTER

�(Benz) tet 30" M. Dor (Dark Empire X Paint It Black)

EARL PORTER is in a class by itself and sets a new standard in black daylilies. This 5 1/2" showy black purple with its beautiful ruffling is far darker than parent PAINT IT BLACK, and also flatter and heavier. A true nocturnal, and blooms are fully open by midnight and are open by midnight the next day. Always FLAT-OPEN and always perfect, and the green throat is lime green by 8 p.m. on a 90� day. The color fades a little by day's end to a fluorescent deep black-violet, but is never badly damaged by either sun or rain. EARL PORTER makes huge plants and boasts extremely well-branched scapes with a bud-count as high as 40. This icon is not just a little heavier and a little darker than my other blacks, it raises the bar by a wide margin. By sundown on a 93� day, EARL PORTER is nearly unchanged, fading to a shimmering violet black, while PAINT IT BLACK has faded to maroon, NIGHT WINGS is fudge brown, and all other blacks I grow are muddy burgundy with gold throats. I simply don't have any "blacks" remotely this sunfast except my NIGHTFLYER and INDIGO VELVET, which was Larry Grace's pick of all my blacks 3 years ago-and neither of them are in the same league as EARL PORTER. My brother-in-law and dear friend EARL PORTER passed away this spring and black daylilies were his passion. He hybridized for only a few years and then moved and had no place to plant seedlings. He introduced 2 good blacks-the diploid COAL MINER and the tetraploid ALASKAN MIDNIGHT. He was in love with this flower and it's only fitting that my finest black bear his name. A clump of EARL PORTER at 7 p.m. on a 90� day simply glows and seems enveloped in a luminescent blue haze. Bottom pic shows EARL PORTER at ...6 p.m. 95� f in July 2011.......SOLD OUT
