MASTER & BOLD RULER(Pierce G’17.)
((Midnight Castle x Buffalo Thunder) x Max Factor) TET, EV, EMRE, 40” high, 9 1/2” - 11 ¾” When extended.5 way branching, 40 Buds.HUGEZones 4-9Hardy. Where in the world do I begin?Firstly, I want to point out that no daylily that I have created and probably will create will change for the better the future of Daylily Hybridizing. This daylily is truly The Master of our garden.MASTER & BOLD RULERhas no faults. If you look at the above stats and embrace the following you will see why I love it so.I would like to add though that this long description is not about pride or exaggeration, or is priced for greed.I basically got lucky and this leap forward is a game changer; not only for me but foreveryonewho chooses to see or breed with him.My claim to fame is simply long hours and hard work, so while breeding for BIG, I made as many crosses and seed as I could, forgoing other directions, to simply explore the gene pool of big!I mostly use the same technique today.
OK here are some facts:The Master has never lost a plant; whether dividing-up in August or in a clump. He has grown and survived well over this past winter in a zone 4 section of New Hampshireafter a cold winter with no mulching or snow cover!Regarding the size factor, the phrasegenetically jumped the fenceis precisely what has happened; again to ALL OF OUR good fortune…The process went from two parents approx. 7” to an offspring over 70% larger.Like a horse giving birth to an elephant! With large ruffles and the occasional angel wings,MASTER AND BOLD RULERdoes not hang-up and has the strength to always open no matter what’s in the petals way.Pod Fertility is average to good whereas generally big flowers are the hardest to set on.
Roman Steel (Pierce G.) (Cutting Loose X Magical Marrakech) X Sib to Buffalo Thunder) TET SEV EE 30” 7” flower, 6 way branching, 35-40 buds.
This is easily one of my finest daylilies, well admired by Matthew Kaskell along with Bluegrass Shadows, which at the time were side by side when Matthew visited. I have bloomed well over a hundred thousand purple seedlings and rarely does a daylily have the presence of Roman Steel. I cannot tell you everything in words just that she sings with style!!! The rich purple petals have dark purple veining throughout and are outlined in a strong ruffled white edge. Inside the edge is a bluish silver shadow that matches the large watermark above the green throat. Honestly Roman Steel looks 3-D to me and is one of the heaviest flowers I grow. I have not been able to truly capture the lure of this daylily in a photo, though every pic could be a cover shot; and I will not use magnifying lenses! Anyway, this flower takes my breath away and I will be continuing to use Roman Steel for some time. Easily fertile both ways, with great success. Very heavy substance. This is a daylily that I would like to see win the Stout Medal someday. Easily fertile both ways. Enjoy $ 225
