Monster Quest
(Gossard, James) 2015 introduction Seedling # G125-12
Larry Grace seedling= [(((Cherry Valentine x Tetra Connie Burton) x (Cimarron Rose x Velvet Throne))) x ((Born to run x Scarlet Angel) x Velvet Throne)) x ((China Clipper x Velvet Throne) x ( Shirley Anne McCord X Marietta Heartbeat) )] x Tetra Emerald Starburst
Tetraploid 29" Midseason Semi Evergreen emo Semi-nocturnal fr 6-7" 3-4 way branching 18-22 buds. Fertile both ways. Rebloomer.
Flowers of Monster Quest are purple with feathered pink watermark (A pattern daylily by AHS definition) and dark purple eye zone and a very green throat. Edge is toothy white, more so on sepals than petals. My goal has been to take Emerald Starburst line into the tetraploids and create a round northern hardy nocturnal tooth line. For many years I disliked nocturnal daylilies because they start opening the night before and lose color by noon and close up by late afternoon. Living in the north we have cold nights, 48-50 degrees F sometimes. As a result flowers open poorly, the pattern and toothy daylilies seem to be the worst. I wanted a daylily that was perfect in the mornings after a cold night but yet take the high heat and still look good at 8 PM. This also corrects for the same problem in the south also. Daylilies that do not melt and are able to look good at 8pm. Everyone said could not be done. However with this new line from Tetra Emerald Starburst I got what I was looking for. Monster Quest is one of the first of many future generations which corrects for this problem in the north. A super good parent for hybridizing large patterned toothy daylilies. Thanks Larry Grace for sharing genetics and selling me tetra Emerald Starburst!. Monster Quest is super pod fertile. Pollen is great to, but you can set so many pods why even use the pollen. You will see Monster Quest in a lot of future introductions. Pedigree is also very interesting being conversion and the best of the big edge flowers. These rare genes not found in any other round daylilies. I just love this daylily. A super hybridizing and garden plant.........$200 single fan..
Wolverine
(Gossard, James) 2010 introduction
(Dragon Fang x Dragon Knight)
Tetraploid 38" MLa Dormant emo fr 7 1/4" 4 way branching 24 buds. Very fertile both ways. Seedling # JG590 Rebloomer.
Very good rust resistance. Northern Hardy.
Wolverine has rose-pink flowers with a yellow green throat. The edge is lined with white and gold claws, fangs and teeth. Several years ago my friend, Mike Holmes wanted to get a teeth program going, I was short on space; they had lots. They just bought a new property. I let him grow a number of my teeth crosses. Well, Wolverine bloomed and did it ever create a stir. It had outstanding branching and bud count on its maiden bloom and lots of teeth. I let Mike grow it and I got stock back later that year. Thanks Mike! But, it was so good and since Mike was keeping a fan, Polston had to have a fan also. Mike told me that he bloomed some fabulous kids out of Wolverine, much better than the parent. That excites me when I hear people get better results from my parents. Mike also told me my photo is poor, it is much better than pictured. It is very pod fertile in full sun; I got 55 pods on my clump this last year (2009). Polston told me he got 30. It has been a tremendous parent for me proven by just seeing the few kids I have bloomed. Wolverine is a break through in dormant edge breeding. Just take a look at the pedigrees below and you will see why. Wolverine besides being a fantastic hybridizing flower, is also a great garden flower. It always has the teeth, great color, branching, bud count, dormancy, and height. It has it all!
