I have an unopened bag of 1,000 clear gel caps that I bought from Wonder Labs in 2012 and kept in a closed cabinet in my basement ever since. They are as good as new. These are convenient for storing pollen in your freezer. Just write what's in there with a fine felt tip pen. Store pollen caps in a zip-lock freezer bag. I've used stored caps for years with no problem, if you take care of your caps. I have enough here and seldom freeze pollen any more, so this bag is not needed here.
1. Collect the stamens you want to use in the morning when the pollen is dry (no rainfall!) and fluffed up. Use tweezers to snap off the anthers into the caps. Avoid letting the stamens get into the caps, as their moisture will degrade the pollen as well as the caps. Then write on the cap what's inside.
2. To use, remove the ziplock bag from the freezer and take out the caps you want to use that morning. Return the remainder to the freezer. Take the caps outsize in a partitioned plastic pill dispenser from the drugstore or some other handy device. Avoid getting moisture on the caps, as they will dissolve. To pollinate, open the cap and touch the pollen inside to the tip of the pistil.
3. Do your pollinating with frozen pollen all at one time and return the pollen to the freezer as soon as you finish using it. Exposure to heat degrades pollen, but if you're careful the caps will last several years. If you drop a capsule to the grass, just abandon it and use a backup capsule. Always have backup caps of the pollen you most want to use.
